The ability to paraphrase is essential for interpreters to master to be able to successfully convey a message in its entirety, including the intended meaning and all its nuances. Strong paraphrasing skills, even within one language, will help interpreters to improve their mental agility and to better make the split-second decisions involved in interpreting. In fact, paraphrasing is one of the  four cognitive activities that are included on the healthcare interpreting CCHI ETOE™ (English-to-English) exam. 

This interactive and engaging workshop will introduce the participants to the sub-skills involved in paraphrasing, and provide multiple opportunities to practice these skills. The participants will have an opportunity to engage in guided practice of the sub-skills - such as coming up with synonyms, opposites or changing the sentence structure, and to review examples of responses to the activities performed during the practice section of the presentation.

As Medical Interpreter Supervisor at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA, I lead a team of medical interpreters and manage translation projects, helping support equitable patient care.
As a certified medical interpreter, I bring extensive experience in interpreter training and education. I am passionate about advancing professional development in our field and have taught both continuing education programs and foundational training courses nationwide—helping interpreters strengthen their skills and ensure quality language access.
My work has been recognized with several awards, including Interpreter of the Year (CHIA, 2021) and Trainer of the Year (AALB, 2024). I am also proud to serve on the board of the National Council of Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC) and California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA), chairing the Outreach Committee.

Published translator and nature-lover extraordinaire, LAURIE BENNETT, delivers a fascinating deep dive into the ins and outs of planning a book-length translation project. Laurie will explore a variety of themes including the pros and cons of book translation, the benefit of making a plan, planning principles, anticipating and avoiding potential pitfalls, payment practices, network building, and many more.

About this Workshop: This webinar will provide an overview of the diversity of Indigenous languages in Canada as well as community-led strategies for their revitalization. Case studies will highlight some of the unique challenges of translating and interpreting Indigenous languages, as well as opportunities for non-Indigenous language experts to support Indigenous language revitalization efforts.

Workshop Facilitator: Dr Heather Bliss is a non-Indigenous linguist living and working in the traditional and unceded territories of the hənq̓ə̓minə̓m̓- speaking peoples. Her interest in Indigenous language revitalization stems from long-standing collaborative relationships with members of the Blackfoot-speaking Siksika and Kaianai Nations in Southern Alberta. Heather is a Lecturer at Simon Fraser University, and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary.

Editorial Style Sheets for Translators: Leveraging the Tools of Traditional Publishers to Aid Memory, Collaborate Smoothly, and Provide Ammo (When Needed)

Editors Canada member and frequent presenter Perrin Lindelauf leads this lunchtime workshop on the editorial style sheet, an essential tool for anyone working with text, whether alone or as part of a team. Different from a house style or style guide, a style sheet is a record of the decisions an editors has made, which can then be referred back to or shared with colleague to avoid re-editing or endlessly consulting reference material. 

This workshop will approach the style sheet with a translator's workflow in mind, giving you a tool you can use on your next project for an immediate boost to your productivity, improved consistency, and a clear accounting of your decisions if you need to back them up. 

About the Presenter:

Perrin Lindelauf is a copy and structural editor living in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. He got his start as a professional writer and editor by writing travel guides about Japan for National Geographic Books. He’s a graduate of the SFU Editing Certificate program, currently working as an academic copy editor for a university publisher. In the course of his university education, he took classes in Old English, Latin, Ancient Greek, French, and Japanese, which led to ten years of life in the Land of the Rising Sun.
